General Comparision for different technologies

  • UV lamp technology
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO)


UV lamp technology inactivates bacteria and a few viruses in controlled conditions. But its effectiveness against RNA viruses is debatable. Following are the reasons :

  • Practically UV rays are not incident on water for the required time to kill bacteria/virus. Hence the consumer is exposed to the health risks of drinking water containing  temporarily deactivated bacteria.
  • Expiry of life of UV lamp and quartz jacket goes undetected. Any lamp diminishes after some time and the same happens with the UV lamp also. Hence a consumer needs to understand that the long usage of a UV lamp may not do the job that is assigned, though it is glowing.
  • Costly (actual) Maintenance.


Reverse Osmosis, or RO,  is the best technology where the water is very hard (high TDS), as there is no other option.  However where the water is not hard  (low to moderate TDS), the consumers must think on the following points :

  • Approximately 70% wastage of feed water. 
  • All essential minerals are removed from water, making the water unpalatable.
  • Costly Maintenance
